Similes are like metaphors
Or at least this one is
-T. Weeks
(A response to a hot shower)
With the right group of people
And with someone else singing
This would be a great karaoke song
Someone should really try it

(A response to all my sweet ideas)
For sale For sale
Some wonderful fruit
Go on try it
You may not like it
The price is small
Just your attention
What could go wrong
It’s on sale

(A response to consequences)
In a room behind plexiglass
Underground
Sits a typewriter on a desk
On exhibit
This room was a war room
Recirculated air
Heavy with smoke and Generals
Back then the typewriter never rested
Transcribing
Clacking urgency in Courier
Now the room is silent and musty
Except for the looky-loos
Pointing
Mumbling at the relics behind the plexiglass
Not one uses these machines that won the biggest war
Inadequate
They have newer wars and machines and Generals
But they do look to the artifact
Curious
Unsure of what they are becoming

(A response to a bite, a pinch, and a kick in the nuts)
Oak tree if you had a head
It would be in the middle
Where they pruned you to avoid the power lines
Where there’s a gap that has formed your arms
Wings frozen in protest
Raised and pretending takeoff
Fall leaves feathering a mossy skeleton
Do it oak tree
I dare you
Fly away
Concrete and asphalt encase your roots and trunk
Rip them up
Turn them over
What are you waiting for
Surprise us all
Fly away

(A response to a rainy drive through Hillsboro)
What’s it called when you know
the name of something
but can’t quite remember?
It’ll come to me.
-T. Weeks
(A response to that thing)
“This isn’t where I thought I’d end up.”
Where did you think you were going?
“I’m not sure but I’ll know it when I see it.”
You’re certain you want to be there?
“Everyone says it’s the best.”
Is that a fact?
“How could it not be?”
That is a good question
“This isn’t helpful. How do I get back to where I was?”
What does it look like?
“I’ll know it when I see it.”
If you say so.

(A response to things I don’t know)
I met a time traveler
They were from the past
“Welcome to the future” I said
“Are you sure?” They asked
“Very” I smiled

(A response to the inevitable)
Tired fist clenched around contingencies
Lets go for a moment
Nowhere-stares and enzo-smiles bubble up

Each time the cat comes back
We worry less about the door
